Project SCORE Overview: Sport Psychology Life Skills for High School Student-Athletes
Project SCORE is a life skills program designed for high school student athletes using sport psychology principles. Its purpose is to teach student athletes the skills and strategies needed to be successful in school, sports, and life, and to help them develop and practice the following characteristics:

Self-responsibility
Commitment
Optimism
Respect
Excellence

Specifically, the goals of Project SCORE are:
  1. Increase student retention and academic eligibility.
  2. Improve academic performance (in the classroom and on standardized tests) and graduation rates.
  3. Increase students' self-esteem and self-confidence through successes in the classroom and through extra-curricular activities, such as athletics or band.
  4. Increase students' abilities to follow through on and be accountable for the commitments they make in school and life.
  5. Over the long term, increase students' enrollment in colleges/universities or vocational training institutes following graduation from high school.
Project SCORE's goals are achieved through a coordinated effort between a Life Skills Counselor and the high school's academic staff. The Life Skills Counselor conducts weekly life-skills classes with the students, offers individual counseling/advising/ tutoring as needed, and acts as a role model for future educational attainment. During the four years of high school, students engage in different activities. Each subsequent year, the students use the skills they learned previously to become more involved and successful in school, sports, and life.

Although any student athlete and school is likely to benefit from being involved in Project SCORE, this curriculum was designed to be implemented in schools and districts where students are under-performing or at-risk of dropping out. We also are committed to developing partnerships with businesses and professional sport teams to help make Project SCORE a success. These partnerships can include sponsorship of schools to fund a Project SCORE counselor or donations of products and services that can be used to reward the students for achieving their academic goals.
