M.S. in Kinesiology with Sport Psychology Emphasis
The Master of Science in Kinesiology with the emphasis in Sport Psychology 36-hour degree includes a 15-hour core curriculum of courses in kinesiology. The student can take 21 hours of additional courses which would allow development of an area of expertise such as sport psychology, exercise physiology, health fitness management, motor behavior, sports sociology, and teaching behavior.

Sport Psychology Training Requirements:
  • 6 semester hours are required.
  • All students will complete a 15-hour core of graduate courses in Kinesiology.

    ___KINE 5100 - Research Perspectives in Exercise and Sport Sciences
    ___KINE 5150 - Quantitative
    ___KINE 5121 - Sport and Exercise Psychology
    ___KINE 5301 - Physiology of Exercise
  • Thesis students will complete KINE 5950 (6 hours)
  • Non-thesis students will complete a comprehensive exam or culminating experience
  • The remaining 15-21 hours will be electives with no more than 6 hours outside of KINE
Students may take a sports psychology practicum (KINE 5850) for at least one year while they are in the program.  This practicum is overseen by a licensed sport psychologist.  Although we recommend that students consider taking a sport psychology practicum through the Center, there are other sport psychology and exercise psychology practica and independent study experiences with sports researchers available. Thesis students will complete KINE 5950 (6 hours), whereas non-thesis students will successfully completes a written comprehensive exam. The remaining 15 hours allow for the development of expertise in areas such as sport psychology, exercise physiology, health fitness management, motor behavior, sports sociology, and teaching behavior. These hours will be electives with no more than 6 being taken outside of KINE (specific classes would be determined in consultation with your advisor).

Admission requirements and the GRE entrance requirement for the kinesiology graduate program is a minimum score of 400 on each section (verbal and quantitative). The GRE must be completed and scores reported before the end of the student's first semester of enrollment in the graduate program. In place of the GRE, the student may take the Miller Analogies Test (MAT) and receive a minimum score of 30.

During your education, the Kinesiology Department offers teaching fellowships which support your educational expenses and provide you with beneficial experience for your future career goals. After graduation, students can pursue careers in the sports health and sports fitness industry, continue their education and seek doctoral degrees in kinesiology, or use the degree to enhance their professional status in the current career.

Sport Psychology Opportunities:
The Center offices are located in Terrill Hall. The offices are designed around the missions of the Center and provide space for student research, center meetings, and individual sport psychology consultations. Student members are welcome to use the Center’s library, computers, and video-technology to enhance their educational experience and professional development. Although the Center’s facilities are available for sport psychology interventions, most practica and consultation work is done outside of the offices within the Dallas, Ft. Worth, and Denton, Texas areas.
