Dr. Trent Petrie - Center Director

Trent A. Petrie, Ph.D. received his doctorate in Counseling Psychology from the Ohio State University in 1991. He currently is a professor in the Department of Psychology at UNT, and has served as the Center’s Director since it’s inception. Dr. Petrie has worked in the field of sport psychology since 1987, providing services to athletes, coaches, and sport teams at all competitive levels. He is a licensed psychologist in the State of Texas, a Certified Consultant, Association for the Advancement of Applied Sport Psychology, and a member of the 2008-2012 United States Olympic Committee Sport Psychology Registry. Dr. Petrie also is an accomplished athlete, having been the co-captain and starting setter of the 1984-1985 Ohio State University Men’s Volleyball Team. Since that time, he has competed as a triathlete and runner, participating in many of the road races in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. In addition, Dr. Petrie has coached at the college and high school levels. His areas of research include psychological antecedents and consequences of athletic injury, eating disorders and body image, academic and personal success of student-athletes, and professional training in sport psychology. Dr. Petrie has published over 65 articles and book chapters, given over 110 presentations at national and international conferences, and received several grants to support his workincluding a 2008-2009 grant from the National Collegiate Athletic Association to support his and Carly Raab's project on the "Physical and Psychological Health of Female Collegiate Athletes.". His 2003 book, coauthored by Dr. Doug Hankes, is entitled "Academic and Life Skills for College Student-Athletes" (3rd edition) and is published by Wadsworth. He has served on the executive boards of the American Psychological Association Division 47 and the Association for Applied Sport Psychology.

Dr. Scott Martin - Coordinator of Coaching Education

Scott Martin, Ph.D., received his doctorate in Education with an emphasis in Sport and Exercise Psychology from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Dr. Scott Martin is an Associate Professor in the Department of Kinesiology, Health Promotion, and Recreation at UNT. He is a Fellow and a Certified Consultant of the Association for the Advancement of Applied Sport Psychology and a member of the United State Olympic Committee Sport Psychology Registry. Dr. Martin has extensive experience in sports and coaching which has allowed him to help numerous athletes and sport teams over the past two decades. He uses digital video computer technology and a multitude of mental skill techniques to accurately evaluate and enhance performance. His research interests include coaching effectiveness, perceptions of mental skills training, perceptions of effort and force, and the lifestyle behaviors and beliefs of children and youth. Dr. Martin has authored or co-authored over 25 professional research articles, 10 popular press articles, two book chapters, and 75 presentations at national and international conferences. He has received over $1.5 million dollars in external funding from agencies such as the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board and the National Institutes of Health (NIH). He is a member of several sport and exercise psychology professional organizations including the Association for Applied Sport Psychology (AASP); American Psychological Association (APA) Division 47; International Society of Sport Psychology (ISSP); North American Society for the Psychology of Sport and Physical Activity (NASPSPA); American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM); and American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (AAHPERD).

Dr. Christy Greenleaf

Christy Greenleaf, Ph.D., received her doctorate in Exercise and Sport Science with an emphasis in Sport and Exercise Psychology from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Currently she is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Kinesiology, Health Promotion and Recreation at UNT. Her research interests include (a) body concerns and disordered eating among athletes and exercisers and (b) weight bias. Dr. Greenleaf has co-authored four book chapters, nine refereed academic articles and 12 invited or applied articles. She has given 29 professional presentations at regional, state, and national conferences. Dr. Greenleaf is a member of the Association for Applied Sport Psychology (AASP) and the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (AAHPERD). She is on the editorial board for the Women in Sport and Physical Activity Journal. Dr. Greenleaf's own sport experiences have included amateur and professional figure skating, and she is currently a member of a competitive adult synchronized skating team.
