| With each program/intervention, our sport psychology
consultants and licensed sport psychology consultants work closely with the athlete, team, coach/leader or organization to develop individualized programs and interventions that address their specific needs. Because we know that performances occur in the context of the individuals’ lives, we consider these broader factors whenever we plan a
sport psychology consultation. For example, an athlete's, team's or organization's performance can be influenced not only by physical (e.g., strength, speed) or technical (e.g., motor skills) factors, but also by personal (e.g. relationships, job stress) factors. By examining these factors and all the other ways in which an athlete's or team’s performance might be affected, we can assist them in reaching their potential in all areas of their lives.
Whether working with an individual athlete/performer or sport team/business organization, we begin any sport psychology consultation with an assessment to determine the specific needs of the individual or group. We start each assessment by meeting and talking with the individual who has requested our services, such as the athlete/performer, coach, parent, or manager. Whether we meet in our center, on the playing field where the athlete/team practices and competes, or in your offices, the purpose of this meeting is to establish a trusting, positive relationship and to learn about your current performances. We also may have you complete performance questionnaires so we may better understand your approach to competition and help you identify the areas in which you can improve. With your permission, we may observe you at practice/competition or at your job, or talk with other individuals (e.g., athletic trainers, coaches, parents, coworkers) who have information that may shed some light on your current performances. Following the assessment, we provide you with an individualized “game plan” where we detail how we can assist you in achieving your performance goals. Throughout this process, we work collaboratively with you, drawing on your strengths as well as your knowledge of yourself and your performance abilities. Through this open collaboration, we establish challenging, but realistic goals that help you make the necessary changes to be more satisfied in life and successful in your performance arena. This collaborative, individualized and positive approach underlies all the work we do. Once we have established the “game plan,” we continue to work closely with you so you will develop the mental skills and strategies that will help you attain the desired level of performance excellence. Throughout, we monitor your progress and help them make adjustments as necessary so you can reach your goals in the desired timeframe. |
