Successful sport performances depend on being prepared in four
foundational areas:
-
Physical
- Technical
- Tactical
- Mental
Although athletes and coaches spend considerable time and focus
developing themselves physically (strength, speed, stamina), improving
their skills and techniques, and learning new tactics (e.g., game plans
and strategies) for competing in their sport, mental preparation often
takes a back seat with no specific focus given to training athletes in
this area. Sport psychology is the bridge that links the mental
and physical aspects of training.
Sport psychologists systematically focus on the
mental preparation of sport athletes to help them reach their goals by
performing more consistently. Specifically, sports psychologists work
with athletes, coaches, teams, and even sports organizations to help them
achieve:
- Mental toughness and peak performance
- Leadership skills
- Team cohesion and effective communication
-
More enjoyment and success in their competitions
