Sport Psychology Information for Athletes

________________________________________________________________________

Athletes at all competitive levels, from Olympians to professionals to collegians to high school and select players, use sport psychology strategies and sports psychology principles to become mentally tough, improve their training, and ultimately reach their goals in sports competition. In fact, Olympic athletes and coaches have identified the mental skills and strategies involved in sport psychology as being KEY for athletic success and enjoyment. These sports psychology skills include:

 - Managing and controlling emotions
 - Learning to relax before and during competition
 - Setting effective goals for training and performance
 - Building confidence through positive thinking
 - Visualizing success prior to performance
 - Learning to focus attention properly during training and competition
 - Developing physical and psychological routines to prepare one’s body and   mind to perform at one’s best

Our sport consultants and sport psychologists can help individual athletes learn and effectively apply these and other mental toughness and sport psychology skills so they can maximize their training and performances. We also can work with teams to help them improve their communication, leadership, cohesion, and overall performances using sport psychology principles.

But we also understand that athletes are not just sport performers.  They are students, sons/daughters, friends, workers…etc. who will experience a wide range of stressors and personal problems, such as academics, friendships/dating, injury, handling anger, and eating nutritiously, that can negatively influence their sport performances. Athletes also may experience psychological problems, such as depression, anxiety, drug/alcohol abuse, and eating disorders, which can affect them on and off the field as well. Our sport consultants and licensed sport psychologists are available to help athletes with these more psychological concerns and help them find success, fun, and satisfaction in sport.
