Founded in 1998, the Center is a multidisciplinary
agency within the University of North Texas. Drawing from the areas of
Psychology and Exercise/Sport Science, the Center’s mission is to:
- Provide sport psychology services to the
university and community with the purpose of helping athletes, coaches
and sport organizations increase their satisfaction with and enjoyment
of sport and improve their performances no matter what their level of
expertise or competition
- To provide education and training to coaches,
parents, officials and other professionals in sport psychology
techniques, strategies and information
- To conduct research to increase our knowledge
and understanding of sport performance

A. Our Staff
Our sport consultants are trained in the
disciplines of psychology and sport science, and maintain some of the
following credentials:
- Certified Sport Consultant, Association for
Applied Sport Psychology (AASP)
- Fellow, Association for Applied Sport
Psychology
- Member of the 2004-2008 United States Olympic
Committee Sport Psychology Registry
- Licensed Psychologist, State of Texas
In addition, our consultants have competed as
athletes and served as coaches at the collegiate level and higher.
Throughout 2006-2007, three of our staff members—Matt
Atkins, Erica Force, and Dustin Johnson—will be working within PSA
to provide services to coaches, athletes, and parents.

B. Our Website
Our website provides information about our
services, but more importantly, provides free sport psychology resources
to athletes, coaches, parents, and other interested individuals.
Specifically, we provide:
- Performance Edge Newsletter - published
twice per year, the newsletters provide in-depth information on a wide
range of topics related to coaching, athletic performance, and mental
skills. Articles also include interviews with well-known athletes, such
as 1996 Olympic Gold Medalist Dan O’Brien, and coaches, such as UCLA’s
Hall of Fame Basketball Coach John Wooden.
- Enewsletters – these weekly updates
address current issues related to sport psychology and coaching. If you
would like to receive the E-News, simply send an e-mail to
sportpsych@unt.edu and place “subscribe” in the subject line.
- Sport Quotes – as part of our E-News, we
provide an inspirational sport quote of the week.
All of these resources are available through our
